The Lake County model railroad club was founded in Downtown Wauconda IL in Febuary of 1971. In quick order a track plan was agreed on and bench work started. A month and a half later on April 16th 1972 a "golden spike" was nailed into the track with the completion of the main line. The club founders worked hard and by November of 1972 they held the first open house. We have been highlighted in a few model railroad magazines thru the years and as of Recently we took part in a filming production for a DVD focusing on Model railroad Club layouts.
The club was founded by a small group of skilled people that had avision to turn a small old basement into a world of 1/87 scale model railroading. Our quiet little town of Wauconda IL was the perfect location as most of the early members lived in or near town. Some 45+ years later we still occupy this same location. The same basic trackplan design for the approximately 360’ mainline has been in place since our inception. The founders had really thought out the track plan as the mainline has gone un-changed and it allows us to operate just like a real short line railroad would.
One of the best known items the club had in its early years was its fully functional CTC/dispatchers panel. It was a long desk with toggle switches and lights. The panel was manned to control train traffic across the layout. The dispatcher (shown below) would control signals and turnouts and the engineers would run their trains by watching the signal aspects. This panel was removed sometime in the early 2000's when DCC train control was installed.
Through the years 200 members have come and gone and with the layout has underwent many small changes. Mostly scenery and Electronics but some industry tracks have been reconfigured as well. When first started the Soo Line railroad had a major influence on the structuresand town names used on the layout. By the late 70’s the railroads operating in the Pacific Northwest held influence. In the mid 90’s the railroads operating in the front range of the rocky mountains of Colorado had their day. Around this time the layout took name of the Wauconda Central railroad. the WCRR operates as from Palatine north to Madison Wisconsin. in the early 2000's the lower yard was re configured and they added a upper switching district that is known as Wauconda. The layout today reflects a main Line that travels from the town of Wauconda Illinois to Madison Wisconsin. The lines represent both current and past railroad right of ways. The townnames are real and in some form or another they were all connected by rail at some point in history.
The club has always been very active in our community. From the very start we held open house events free to the public.
We are a small club of about 18 members and we meet every 1st 3rd and 4th Friday night of the month. We still keep our doors open free of charge so the local communitys can come down and visit with us. We are proud to say we have had many generations of familys walk thru our doors and visit with us. Its something we hope to continue for many more years.
We hold a spring and winter open house event each year and participate in Waucondas Christmas walk. We try to open for the popular community events when we can accommodate. Working with our community has been a tradition from day one. On special ocassions we have also hosted private functions for partys willing to pay a nominal fee.
100% of donations made to the LCMRRC go directly to help fund the layout and club as a whole.
